Beauty Blender, Foundation Brush & Stippling Brush Comparison

Ever wonder which applicator you should use when applying your foundation?
Or if the Beauty Blender ($19.95) lives up to all the hype?
Yeah, me too.
which foundation applicator works best

So I did a comparison with 3 different applicators to see what, if any, difference there was.

I used my It Cosmetics CC Cream, which has been my go-to foundation for the last few months.
I did all 3 on the same day so you could see the results without any changes to my skin.

I simply applied ONE pump of the CC Cream to my hand each time, and then used each applicator to put the foundation on (no primer or anything). I gently washed each application off after taking a snapshot, then moved on to the next.
The difference in results was subtle. There were no dramatic differences; though, in my opinion, the foundation brush provided the LEAST coverage, while the stippling brush seemed to provide slightly more coverage than the others (as the picture below shows).

Best way to put on foundation

So which one is best?
Well, it depends on you and what you want.
Some people want more coverage, while some don't like heavy coverage. For me, it depends on the state of my skin. I was having a breakout at the time I did the comparison, so I wanted MORE coverage.
(BTW, I chose the breakout spot specifically to test, so you could see the coverage difference easier...it wasn't to gross you out, I promise.)

Also, you may get different results depending on the type of foundation you use. For example, cream vs. mousse, or stick vs. liquid. Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy all the different foundations and all the different applicators and check them all.
I DO think it's worth getting at least a knock-off of the BB to try out and see what you think. Also, it supposedly is great for applying or blending in cream blushes, and also to help blend in concealer and such.

Worth mentioning:
I do NOT like having to wet the beauty blender each day before using. It's not a deal-breaker, just an annoyance. Also, no matter what, I can't get the BB all the way clean, even using BB's own cleanser. So it always looks dirty. That said, I've been using it for a couple of months now each time I apply foundation, and have grown fonder of it. I may not buy one when this one gives out. I may just stick with a stippling brush.
Or, who knows? Maybe there will be some new, next-best-thing by then!
(I'm really excited to see the new Bare Minerals liquid mineral foundation with special applicator brush that is due on May 1st.)

What do you use to apply foundation, and are you happy with it?

I go back and forth when it comes to applying foundation. Lately I've been using the Crown Brush Blender because my face is super dry right now. (Buffing foundation in with a brush just accentuates my dry spots.) I also like to stick with light coverage over the spring and summer months so the blender is the perfect option. I agree with you regarding cleaning it though--what a beeyotch! And you're right--it never looks clean.

Great post. I use a Kabuki brush to apply my liquid foundation. I find that I get a smooth even coverage that is not too heavy looking. The new Bare Minerals foundation and brush look very interesting.

I LOVED the Beauty Blender! I loved the finish it gave my skin, however, I began to have a TON of breakouts all of a sudden. I finally figured out it was probably the BB and threw it away. Since then, I haven't had many issues with breakouts. I cleaned it, too. I don't know if it was the BB itself or once it gets contaminated, it's just hard to get clean?? I may try a cheaper alternative. I just can't see spending $20 often for more and more BBs.

Yes, agreed. If you have to buy a new one every month, that would add up. Hmmmm. I wonder...you know how they say to wash kitchen sponges in the dishwasher to kill bacteria? I wonder if that would work?
Ohhhh or in the microwave?! I saw someone cleans their sponges in there with white vinegar. I will definitely try either of those methods if I buy another one!

Wow the stippling brush looks like it is the best! but I never used any applicators except my fingers. I know that's probably bad but I have done it for awhile now. I am just starting out getting more makeup to get better at applying and everything but it looks like I should get a stippling brush lol!

The stippling brush is a great tool to have, for sure. That said, not all foundations will work best with it. The current foundation I'm using (and loving!), Physicians Formula Spotless (http://therealmomreview.blogspot.com/2014/07/youthful-wear-spotless-serum-foundation.html), works best to me with application with just my hands...same as what you're using. As long as your hands are clean & you remember to clean them afterwards so you don't end up with makeup on your clothes or in your hair...it's totally fine...and sometimes better, lol!
I have been using beauty blenders with other tools for at least a year now. If I use a foundation brush, it seems to take away my primer or moisturizer, thus leaving my skin dry and patchy. I like to apply My Tarte Shape Tape with a my NYX mixer to adjust the shade/moisture as needed, (can't praise this mixture enough. I don't even bother with foundation lately.) then I go in with my brushes to lightly apply blush and a light dusting of finishing powder. I have been loving the sample of Winky Lux Diamond Powder I got from Ipsy. It's not drying, which many finishing powders tend to be. I like to mix it with other, less illuminating powders. I love the formula, but they could have gone a tad easier on the illumination. It is nice though, and not glittery. I love paragraphs.
